Een bekende religieuze minderheid binnen de Koerdische inwoners zijn een jezidi’s. In een zomertijd over 2014 komen ze in het nieuws, daar ze door Kan zijn verdreven worden uit Noord-Irak. Heel wat jezidi’s vluchten naar dit Sinjargebergte, maar Kan zijn omsingelt hen en de vluchtelingen zitten dagenlang in verzengende hitte vast.

Dit blijft sindsdien onrustig in de gewest. Vanwege de Koerden in de andere landen blijft autonomie voorlopig wat dat ver weg kan zijn. Onafhankelijk over mekaar zijn de Koerdische gewest’s te zwak om autonoom te bestaan en de overheersende landen Iran, Irak, Turkije en Syrië laten die strategische regio’s niet ineens gaan.

Sinds een komst van een Koerdische regering in Kurdistan 2005 kan zijn Erbil ons nieuwe straat ingeslagen. De plaats is via velen gezien als een toegang tot ons economisch Irak en een voorbeeld vanwege een rest van nederland.
